How LONG actually is Goretex "Lifetime" Warranty?

Goretex is the gold standard for Motorcycle Gear Waterproof providing durable waterproofing with awesome breathability which promote ultimate comfort and weather protection. We always saw the label of "Lifetime Warranty" at Goretex tags. How long actually is the so called "Lifetime"?

This is often misintepreted by end users, where "Lifetime" mean 10 years, 20 years or the biker's lifetime. In fact, it mean the practical lifetime of a product, it is determined by the intensity of the usage and the nature of the product itself. For example:

1. User A bought a Goretex jacket for 15 years but only use it a few times, it is properly cleaned and stored everytime he use the jacket, the jacket still look pretty new. He encounter rain water leakage issue and submitted warranty claim and the warranty is honored.

2. User B bought a Goretex jacket for 2 years. He travel to more than 5000km and the jacket was not properly cleaned and maintained. It look worn out with some small puncture holes. He encounter rain water leakage issue and submitted warranty but it is declined.

So the conclusions are there are few "T&C" need to adhered with or else the warranty is basically will be voided, these are the "symptoms":

a) Rips, Tears or Cuts
b) Burns and Abrasions
c) Accidents and Crashes
d) Improper Care or Negligence
e) Normal Wear & Tear
f) Modification and Alteration
g) Use other than the product's intended purpose

They sound like common sense but surprisingly a lot of Goretex users are not aware of these terms. So, when the leakage happened, the sellers always push the ball to Goretex whereby it is seller responsibility to educate the users.

Another term that we need take note is the potential lifespan of a product, These are general guidelines for riding gears lifespan:

1. Helmet             :  5 Years Of Use, **(1 Year of Use on Interior Padding)
Max-out at 8 Years After Production
2. Jacket / Pants   :  4 Years Of Use, Max-out at 7 Years After Production
3. Gloves              :  2 Years Of Use
4. Boots                : 5 Years of Use, **(1 Year Of Use on Sole)

Regarding the maintenance, the Durable Water Repellent (DWR), the water repellent coating that applied to all Goretex products which lowers the surface tension of the fabric and causing water to bead up and roll off instead of being absorbed need to be checked regularly and reapply when necessary. Reapplying is necessary if the garment no longer bead water. It will be easily spotted when the garment being wetted and darker in color in spots or more. If this is neglected, it can declined under term of Improper Care or Negligence.

So "How Long" you use the garment is not the primary concern when you refer to the "Lifetime" warranty and instead "How Good" you maintain your garment.

Motorcycle BOOTS Buying Guide

Motorcycle Boots are an important piece of protective gear. Even a RM200 pair of boots is vastly superior to the tennis shoes, logger boots or whatever else you might be wearing. Many gear makers also produce their own boots such as Alpinestars, Fox, Thor, Fly, Shift and others. But, there are also dedicated boot companies which focus solely on producing quality footwear such as TCX, Sidi and Gaerne among others.
